HOW WE FOUND HARMONY

After a few years of real estate and home-brewing beer on the side, three Eastown siblings did some soul searching during the recession (like ya do) and instead of tearing their clothes and donning sackcloth, they thought, “Hey, we should start our dream project!”

It turns out they were NOT completely foolish…

HARMONY EASTOWN

Barry, Heather, and Jackson VanDyke scraped together enough pixie dust to purchase an abandoned post-prohibition liquor store, which was carved out of a 1928 residential home. It was an eyesore for sure. The siblings (and maybe some gullible friends) got to work cleaning, gutting, scheming and dreaming. They bought a stainless steel five-barrel dairy tank from a farm in Wisconsin and began brewing and tweaking their best recipes.

Harmony Brewing Co. is a home-brewer dream project, turned Eastown staple. The original location is now celebrating six years of batch-brewing the finest craft beer this side of Grand Rapids! It’s also the birthplace of our award-winning pizza, which is available for delivery 7 days a week!

Harmony Hall

Soon after opening, Harmony realized they couldn’t keep up with demand. (It’s sad to run out of beer). So they expanded into an empty Bavarian-Mexican stronghold on the west side of Grand Rapids. The old castle started off as a sausage factory in 1908, then later in the ‘60s it became Little Mexico, a restaurant the VanDyke family loved back in the day.

Thus, Harmony Hall opened in 2015 with an expanded ten-barrel system and five large fermentation tanks. They hit the ground running with 30 beers on tap, including some great lagers to celebrate the German heritage of the building.

Much of the original Bavarian architecture and Mexican relief murals were preserved in homage to the past occupants. The whimsical decor was inspired to life by the infamous Jack-of-the-Woods spirit muse—his leafy visage always giving thoughtful and quiet approval to Harmony’s creations.
